Inspired by an upcoming Valentine's-themed craft fair, I made these! Dubbed a "smitten" by the power of Facebook, it's a mitten with two cuffs, designed for holding hands. The prototype is pictured above; I've since tried a slightly different version that's a little less fiddly, but it has a seam, which I'm against. Next step is to write up the pattern and have someone other than me try to make one.
Can you tell those are hearts, in the band there? Aaaaaawwwwwww ...
Have you come up with a pattern yet??? I'm desperate to knit smittens for my bestie and her husband this Christmas.
ReplyDeleteI don't have anything written down ... but here are the basics:
ReplyDeleteKnit a cuff (ribbing of your choice -- I think this is 2x2) 3-4 inches long. Probably easiest to knit it flat, unless you hate seaming as much as I do, so cast on enough stitches to make it 7-8 inches wide. After 3-4 inches of rib, change to stockinette for an inch or so, increasing by 1 stitch every other row at the midpoint.
Put all stitches on a holder, and make another cuff just like the first.
Once you have two cuffs, put all the stitches together on a circular needle and begin knitting in the round. Keep increasing every other row until the body is the circumference you want.
Keep knitting around until the body is about 4-5 inches long from the place where you started knitting in the round. Then start to decrease as you would for a hat, probably K2tog after every 6th stitch. Change to dpns when necessary.
The last step is sewing up the seams in the cuffs -- and you're done!
